Visiting delegate from EU Parliament holds meeting with UN system Eritrea Print E-mail

European Parliament delegation is visiting Eritrea, starting from October 24, 2008. The aim of the visit was to examine the state of peace, development and humanitarian conditions in Horn of Africa. During their stay, the parliamentarians held meetings with UNCT Eritrea on October 27, 2008.

Through the meeting Mr. Alian Hutchinson, head of the delegation and leader of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament said that they came to East Africa as a fact-finding mission representing all European citizens.

The UNCT Eritrea led by Mr. Alfred Sallia Fawundu, acting UN Resident/Humanitarian Coordinator, and some of his colleagues, the Representatives of WHO and UNICEF,  briefed the visiting parliamentarians issues regarding state of peace and developmental activities undertaken by UN Eritrea.

The food security and the economic situation in general; health and education were among the topics discussed during a meeting with United Nations officials. 

Likewise, the World Bank manager in Eritrea and Somalia Mr. Chris Lovelace outlined the efforts that the UN is undertaking to support the governments of Eritrea’s efforts to achieve economic growth.

In his briefing the WB manager observed that as Eritrea is one of the poorest countries in the world with per capita income of about US $ 200, much need to be done to stimulate economic growth and ensure sustainable development including food security.
