27 January 2006 - In cooperation with the United Nations Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE), the UNO Eritrea marked the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.

In the presence of government officials, religious leaders, invited guests, and members of the Diplomatic Corps, the UN flag was raised by the Uruguayan contingent. Following the UN flag raising, peace songs were presented by Cathedral Choir and then the Special representative of the Secretary General (SGRSG) H.E. Ambassador Legwaila Joseph Legwaila read the Secretary General's message for Holocaust Day.

To reflect the importance of peaceful resolution of conflict, a drama song was presented by the Kenyan contingent which was warmly received by the audience. Finally, the SRSG accompanied by the UN Country Team coordinator Mr. Macleod Nyirongo toured the photo exhibit and laid roses for the victims of the Holocaust. The commemoration was held at the UNMEE HQ compound in Asmara and during the commemoration UN Heads of Agencies, Diplomats, and invited guests were among the dignitaries. Banners located in the main streets of Asmara informed the local community about the event.
