To mark the International Day of Peace 2006, UN Office Eritrea in cooperation with United Nations Mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia (UNMEE), organized an activity at UNMEE headquarters in Asmara which brought together participants from the Diplomatic corps, NGOs and the United Nations.

In the opening of the commemoration, the UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Macleod Nyirongo, highlighted the importance of peace in development and appreciated the efforts of UNMEE staff for carrying out efforts to accomplish the UN mandate. The Secretary-General’s acting special representative Ambassador Azouz Ennifar read the SG’s message on the International Day of Peace. Representatives of different religious groups from Muslim, Jewish, Christian and Hindu communities prayed for peace. To bring awareness to the Eritrean public about the event, banners were displayed in different corners of the capital city, Asmara.
